Microsoft® Word 97 Quick Reference

Glossary

This glossary contains the terms that appear italicized throughout the book. Look them up as you go along or scan for any terms with which you are not familiar.

A

active cell pointer In Excel, the selected cell to receive the data or formula.

Active Web Shared by all Microsoft Office 97 programs, this feature is used to author and browse documents on an intranet or on the Web.

animation A text effect that makes the text move or flash and is useful for online documents. Word 97 effects include flashing background, blinking lights, red or black ants moving around the text, and shimmer and sparkle text.

aspect ratio The ratio of height to width. When you retain the aspect ratio, any change in height will automatically change the width so the ratio remains constant.

AutoCaption A feature that automatically adds a caption with a sequential number to items of a particular type as you insert them in a document.

AutoCorrect Use this feature to automatically correct mistakes as you type, to change straight quotes into smart quotes, and to fix certain capitalization errors.

AutoFormat A feature by which Word analyzes each paragraph and how it is used in a document, and applies a style based on that analysis.

AutoText This feature enables you to store frequently used text or graphics, so that they can be quickly inserted in a document as needed.

B-C

bookmark A named marker for a block of text, a table, graphic, or a position in a document that helps you move to the location quickly.

clip art A graphics file that you can insert in your documents.

comment A comment added to a document. A comment mark is inserted in the document and the comment is displayed in the comment pane. Also referred to as annotation.

D

data form Used to represent one data record, this form enables you to add, delete, or modify a record in the data source.

data source This term is used in merging to refer to information that changes in each letter, for example, names and addresses.

Document Map A new way to move quickly through long or online documents.

drawing object An object you create by using one of the tools on the Drawing toolbar.

drop cap A large capital letter of the first word that is set into a paragraph.

E

end-of-cell mark The point beyond which no text can be entered in the cell of a table.

external link A hyperlink that jumps to a Web or FTP site. Or, a hyperlinked file located on another computer in a network, an intranet, or Internet site.

F

field code A code or marker representing a Word field; you can view the codes or view the results of the codes.

file sharing Allowing others to have access to your files. This can be accomplished by placing files on a network.

file sharing options Options for assigning passwords to a document or for suggesting that it be opened as a read-only document.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) A set of rules that governs the transfer of files between computers.

G

GIF (Graphic Interchange Format) A format for compression of graphic images, especially continuous tone and line art images.

gridlines Dashed lines that outline the edges of the cells in a table and do not print.

H

handles Small boxes attached to graphic objects, used to re-size, move, and select objects.

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) The underlying code of Web pages.

hyperlink A graphic or text that connects to another file, a named location in a file, or to a Web page.

I

internal link A hyperlink that jumps to a document on the same computer as the page containing the hyperlink, or to a named location within the page.

ISP (Internet Service Provider) Provides access to those things available on the Internet, newsgroups, Web sites, and e-mail.

J

JPG (Joint Photograph Group) A format for compression of graphic images, especially photographic images; this is the native format that Word uses to store images.

K-N

master document A document you divide into subdocu-ments.

merge field Used to identify which category of data source information will be printed in its location.

O

Office Assistant The Office Assistant is an on-screen, in-teractive program that provides tips, Help information, and interprets what help you might need based on your current actions.

OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) The special coding used by Microsoft to transfer data from one file to another.

OLE1 An alternative method for linking and embedding objects.

Organizer A dialog box that enables you to copy, delete, and rename styles, AutoText entries, toolbars, and macros between documents and templates.

P-Q

path Used to specify the exact location of a file; this might include drive and folder information.

PNG This format is used by Word to convert raster images.

R

revision marks Editing marks in a document entered by protecting or marking a document for revisions, or by choosing Format, AutoFormat.

revisions A means of tracking changes in a document; the document must be protected or marked for revisions.

RGB (Red, Green, Blue) The color mode used to create custom colors for Web pages. In HTML, RGB colors are converted to hexadecimal code.

S

ScreenTips The small pop-up labels that appear next to a toolbar button, revision, or comment when you move the mouse pointer onto the button, revision, or comment, and pause.

section break Contains all formatting, such as margins, line numbers, and page size, for the section immediately preceding it.

sections Divisions in a document that enable you to change formatting elements only within that portion of the document.

style A collection of formats identified by a single name.

subdocument A section of a master document.

T

Table AutoFormat A feature that automatically formats and sizes tables.

table of authorities A list that contains the locations where citations occur in a legal brief generated by Word based on marks inserted in the document with the Insert, Index and Tables, Mark Citation command.

table of contents A list of the contents of a document generated by Word based on built-in heading styles.

table of figures A list of figures or other items in a document generated by Word based on captions inserted with the Insert, Caption command.

template A generic document for text, graphics, and formatting used to standardize and avoid repetitive work.

text box A type of drawing object that can contain text or an imported graphic.

U-V

URL (Uniform Resource Locator) An address for an Internet site.

W-Z

WMF (Windows Metafile) A format for compression of graphic images that is used by Windows applications.

Word publication A term used to describe documents that contain hyperlinks to the Internet or an intranet.

WordArt A supplementary application supplied with Word that is used to create special text effects.

World Wide Web (WWW) A vast system of computers throughout the entire world connected electronically by modems that allows information in the form of text, graphics, sound, and animation to be accessed from any other computer that has an Internet connection.
